Modern Apprenticeships help bridge the gap between work and school.
Doing a Modern Apprenticeship (MA) offers you the chance to take a National Vocational Qualification and learn the skills needed for a specific job and get a certificate at the end of it all.
With an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship qualification, you could go on to higher education via a Foundation Degree.
A Modern Apprenticeship allows you to work and train towards a qualification employers value and get paid at the same time.
There would be a new programme called Entry to Employment (E2E) for students who are not yet ready for the Modern Apprenticeship.
By 2005, all 16-17 year olds with 5 GCSE passes at grades A* to G (including English and maths) will be entitled to a Modern Apprenticeship place. 16-17 year olds without these grades will also be entitled to an MA place if they do well enough during E2E (see above) and if they have Level 1 Key Skills in communication and application of number. If you haven't yet got the basic skills, you would be entitled to continue studying literacy, numeracy and ICT to Level 2.
